MEASURE: A SenseHat Smart Home Measuring System

This project fully utilises the sensors on SenseHat to build a SenseHat smart home measuring System MEASURE. There are three functionalities provided by MEASURE: Level meter, Compass, and HomeKit Integration. Level meter can detect if a line is horizontal or if a surface is flat, and a compass can calculate the degrees turned as well as finding correct directions. If not in use, MEASURE can be a perfect HomeKit accessory that reports readings to your device. So MEASURE is a smart tool that can detect temperature and humidity right at your mobile and help determine positions for furniture placement. It can also provide angle guidance for homemade DIY stuff, and assist you in many other areas.

When the internet first came into existence, it came with a mission: to bring people closer together. After more than 20 years of development, we have witnessed the birth of many life-changing innovations like social networks. They can help in connecting us with more and more people, even distant ones, yet only in a virtual form. This is where the problem starts to emerge: virtual content and connections are dominating our lives, disconnecting us from the real world. This is a problem we would like to address with Ping. It is a next-generation social network aiming at reconnecting our users back to reality so that our users will be able to pay more attention to the people and events around them, but not only to the virtual content shown on a 5-inch screen in front of them.

HKU Engineering students @ IBL Global Inclusive STEM+ Leadership week

This year marks the expansion of the Global Inclusive Leadership Program from China to Thailand. More than one thousand students in eighteen institutes from Greater China, Thailand and the UK participate in the leadership weeks. Students immerse themselves in a cross-cultural and social-mixing environment to develop and work closely together to come up with solutions that go beyond their training while adapting themselves in different cultural settings and developing global-minded perspective. For the participants, it is a journey of self-discovery and self-development. Among the values and skills students acquire in the program, innovative ideas, unconditional love and the spirit of teamwork stand out as the most noted and will help them to prepare for the future – a future of global citizenship. As one of the most respected educators in Thailand remarks: “it is truly an education of the twenty-first century.”

ClearBot: Decentralized Robot Swarms to Clean our Oceans

Ocean plastics destroy our natural marine and coastal habitats, endanger wildlife across the globe, pollute our food chain, and ultimately affecting the global water-food-energy nexus. Here, we present ClearBot, a scalable, AI-powered, plastic collecting intelligent robotic solution to address the ocean plastic epidemic with a sustainable community-centric symbiotic ecosystem.

HKU Racing

Formula Student is a renowned educational engineering competition, combining practical engineering with soft skills including business planning and project management. It is a proving ground for students who want to create and change the world. Electrification of transportation system is here, the combination of electric powertrain and traditional mechanical system has made this competition attractive to lots of industries leading to companys’ attention and support. This competition jump starts our students’ knowledge and skills set for their future career. HKU Racing is the first team from Hong Kong to compete in Formula Student (European series).

Smart parking system

Have you ever felt tired when you need to find a parking space inside a car park? Do you want to save your precious time from queueing at the car park entrance? If so, Smart Parking System is your solution. When you are entering the car park with Smart Parking System, what you need to do will be just driving your car onto our Smart Guided Vehicle. The Smart Guided Vehicle will then drive your car to the assigned parking space. When you want to take your car back, you can assign the time that you prefer. The process will be smart, user-friendly, energy-efficient and effective.

RFID and autonomous vehicle

Have you ever imagined that your vehicle can be self-controlled automatically? Your car will bring you to your designated destination with the fastest route, avoiding collision while your hands are not holding the steering wheel or even following a specific car that has the same destination as you. All of these can be achieved by autonomous vehicle.
In the project, our main objective is to create a simple and reliable autonomous vehicle. With RFID control, your dream may success . This is the future autonomous vehicle.

Lumino

Guide dogs and white canes are currently the most common forms of navigational aid for the visually impaired. Though common, it is not an effective solution as there is a severe shortage of only 50 guide dogs in Hong Kong. Guide dog training is time-consuming and white canes on the other hand are limited to its length, and the true nature of the detected obstructions are unknown to the user.

Lumino aims to provide a cost-efficient one-stop solution to barrier-free movement for the visually impaired.

It is a innovative device that represents both a guide dog and a white cane by providing smart-object identification, hazard identification, real time GPS navigation with additional markers and haptic feedback.

Luxo – A personal assistant lamp

Inspired by animatronics, we built a personal assistant lamp – Luxo. Luxo is a highly customizable voice based robot who portrays it’s emotions through it’s movements and LED lamp. It was developed using open source technologies and with an emphasis on modularity. Based on Pixar’s character Luxo Jr. and Abhishek Singh’s robot Peeqo, Luxo proves to be not only a productivity companion, but also an entertainer!
